Substantial Bread

This is the recipe for the substantial bread used during the Holy Eucharist. You are welcome to bake loaves for use during our services. Please follow the recipe below, freeze the loaves in plastic bags, and bring them with you to Church.

  • 1 cup water, lukewarm
  • 1 package active dry yeast
  • 3 tablespoons honey
  • 1½ tablespoons olive oil
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 2 2/3 cups whole wheat flour

Preheat oven to 350° F.

Pour the water into a mixing bowl and add the yeast and let sit for 5 minutes. Add the honey and olive oil. Add the flour and salt and mix until the dough comes together. Kneed for 5 minutes. Cover the dough with a damp towel and let it rise until it doubles in size, about 1 to 1½ hours.

Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured board and knead for a moment. Roll the dough out until it is ¼" thick. Cut into rounds using a biscuit cutter or tuna-sized can. Press a cross into the top using the blade of a knife (not cutting through) so that the loaf may be divided into quarters.

Lightly spray a cookie sheet with non-stick spray. Transfer rounds to cookie sheet and bake in preheated oven for 10 to 12 minutes. The loaves may be sealed in plastic bags and frozen for future use.
